چکیده

We provide estimates of volcanism versus time for planets with Earth-like composition and masses 0.25 25 M⊕, as a step toward predicting atmospheric mass on extrasolar rocky planets. Volcanism requires melting of the silicate mantle. We use a thermal evolution model, calibrated against Earth, in combination with standard melting models, to explore the dependence of convection-driven decompression mantle melting on planet mass. Here we show that (1) volcanism is likely to proceed on massive planets with plate tectonics over the main-sequence lifetime of the parent star; (2) crustal thickness (and melting rate normalized to planet mass) is weakly dependent on planet mass; (3) stagnant lid planets can have higher rates of melting than their plate tectonic counterparts early in their thermal evolution, but melting shuts down after a few Gyr; (4) plate tectonics may not operate on high mass planets because of the production of buoyant crust which is difficult to subduct; and (5) melting is necessary but insufficient for efficient volcanic degassing — volatiles partition into the earliest, deepest melts, which may be denser than the residue and sink to the base of the mantle on young, massive planets. Magma must also crystallize at or near the surface, and the pressure of overlying volatiles must be fairly low, if volatiles are to reach the surface. Petrological and geodynamical constraints of Chaldoran basaltic rocks, NW of Iran: evidence from geochemical characteristics

Chaldoran area in NW of Iran has Mesozoic oceanic crust basement. The studied rocks of this region can be divided into three groups: ophiolitic gabbros and pillow lavas, ophiolitic volcanoclastics and Eocene lava flows. Ophiolitic mafic rocks show continental volcanic arc natures and Eocene lava flow shows OIB-like nature. During the Mesozoic, the Chaldoran region was situated in the active cont...

Exotic Earths: forming habitable worlds with giant planet migration.

Close-in giant planets (e.g., "hot Jupiters") are thought to form far from their host stars and migrate inward, through the terrestrial planet zone, via torques with a massive gaseous disk. Here we simulate terrestrial planet growth during and after giant planet migration. Several-Earth-mass planets also form interior to the migrating jovian planet, analogous to recently discovered "hot Earths....

An Estimate of the Age Distribution of Terrestrial Planets in the Universe:Quantifying Metallicity as a Selection Effect

Planets like the Earth cannot form unless elements heavier than helium are available. These heavy elements, or ‘metals’, were not produced in the big bang. They result from fusion inside stars and have been gradually building up over the lifetime of the Universe. Recent observations indicate that the presence of giant extrasolar planets at small distances from their host stars, is strongly corr...

Mineralogical Evolution of Meteorites FRAGMENTS FROM THE BEGINNING

As Earth evolved over the last 4.5 billion years, its mineralogy changed. As we peer back through Earth’s history, it seems logical to think that our lens would grow increasingly fogged and our light ever more dim. How do we see beyond the oldest preserved rocks and minerals, after billions of years of volcanism, plate tectonics, and weathering? How do we see past the Moon-forming collision, wh...

Constraints on the Geochemical Variations and Evolution of the Lunar Crust and Mantle as Revealed

Introduction: Basaltic volcanism is a fundamental process that has occurred on most terrestrial planets like Earth, Moon, and Mars. As partial melts of planetary interiors, basalts have compositions that reflect the planet’s bulk composition, its oxidation state, and the size and composition of its core. Several previous studies have compared bulk-rock major-, minor-, and traceelement compositi...
